What a website actually does for your business: the facts

Open all hours. What a website really does for your business. An old brass key on a burnt-orange background

It is easy to say "every business needs a website". It is more useful to look at what the research shows. Here are four findings that matter to a small business, with the source for each so you can check them yourself. Where a study comes from another country or is a few years old, we say so.

1. People judge your credibility by how your site looks

In a well-known study from Stanford University's Persuasive Technology Lab, 2,684 people evaluated the credibility of live websites. The "design look" of the site was the most frequently mentioned factor, appearing in 46.1% of the comments [1]. The study dates from 2002 and was carried out in the United States, so treat it as a strong indication rather than a law. It still makes a simple point: when people cannot judge you in person, they judge you by what they can see, and the look of your site is a big part of that. This is why we put so much into brand-led web design.

2. Customers check you out before they buy

BrightLocal's 2024 survey of 1,141 US consumers found that 75% say they always or regularly read online reviews, and that 81% use Google to read them. Another 89% said reviews of a local branch would affect their decision to use it in some way [2]. The sample is American, but the behaviour is common: people look you up first. If they find nothing, or something out of date, you lose the sale to the business that does look established.

3. Position on Google matters a great deal

Backlinko analysed more than 4 million Google search results and found that the first organic result receives an average of 27.6% of clicks, is about ten times more likely to be clicked than the result in tenth place, and that only 0.63% of searchers click a result on the second page [3]. If you do not have a website that Google can understand, you cannot compete for any of those clicks. Our guide on how to show up on Google explains where to start.

4. Your customers are online, in large numbers

According to DataReportal's Digital 2026 report, South Africa had 51.7 million internet users in October 2025, which is 79.6% of the population [4]. The same report notes that the published figures may under-represent current use. So roughly four in five South Africans can find you online, and more of them will be searching every year. We look at the numbers in more detail in how many South Africans are online.

What this means for you

A website is not decoration. It is where customers check whether you are credible, where Google decides whether to show you and where a stranger turns into an enquiry. A simple, fast, honest website does all three jobs.
